So, I was messing around with Audacity today for a top-secret project I'm working on. One thing led to another, and before I knew it, I was listening to old podcasts I did for The Trib.
I had no idea how much I would miss it. Podcasting is a blast when you have someone to bounce stuff off of. We're thinking of doing a podcast for the women's ministry at church, which will be awesome. I guess I just really miss doing radio stuff in general. Perhaps I'll start my own podcast one of these days.
---
So, as I was typing this, my doorbell rang, followed by a series of knocks. I thought it was the kid next door, who always wants to know what I'm doing. It wasn't. It was a young guy named Brock who was trying to sell me on a new (different) security system for my home. I thanked him, rejected him and tried to send him on his way. So the guy turns to walk away, then asks if he can have a glass of water. I told him I'd bring him a bottle, because I wasn't comfortable having a stranger in my house while I'm by myself. So when I bring it back, he says, "While you were gone, I noticed that you are a Christian." He was pointing to my Bible study on the table by the door. "Yes, I said." He says: "This has nothing to do with security systems, but I'd like to share with you a special book." He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a ton of LDS literature. TWO sales pitches in one! Holy crap.Current Mood: hungry

So, first things first: Katy Perry is the new Vanilla Ice. I got totally tricked into listening (loudly) "I kissed a girl" because the first 5 seconds of the radio edit are "Rock N Roll Part 2."

We, officially, are multi-console people. Because Matt bought some blow-terrorists-to-bits war game that makes me sick (literally), I rented a few we could play together: Rayman and Don King's Prizefighter. I had never seen Rayman, but Matt had mentioned it a couple of times. It's fun, and it helps me get used to the huge controller. I'm horrible, though, and Matt killed me at a slew of games with silly titles. Prizefighter is hard and fun, and I get knocked out almost every time that I don't win by blows. I'd like to play the career mode. My thumbs are sore, and Matt's staying up til 1 a.m. enamored with his new prize. Happy birthday, baby. ---
We've seen a TON of movies lately (more to come this weekend!), but I still haven't gotten around to seeing "Wall-E." Instead, we've seen a ton of opening-night blockbuster types: "Hancock," "Hellboy 2" and "Wanted." Oh, and we also saw "Speed Racer." The real shame: I missed "Poultrygeist." |

I can't remember the last time I went to a concert. 2007 was pretty dry for us. Oh, I did see Over The Rhine at the late-great Golden West Saloon.
Anyhoo, I'm superduper hoping to see Beirut and the Brunettes in Santa Fe a bit more than a week from now. The sucky thing is that it's SF on a weeknight. And it's likely my first day at my real job. And tix are $20 each (which breaks matt's cheapskate budget)... But the Brunettes are fun, and I think Beirut is probably one of the better bands to catch live.
Here's hoping... |

My life is moving along so quickly, strangely. --
So, I officially have a job. Well, is it official if I haven't technically started yet? I was in California last week for training. The jury is still out on how I feel about my new work, and the trip was so uncomfortable, it did little to reassure me. When Christians are drowning in their own bitterness, their own bile and self-importance and self-righteousness, it leaves a remarkably vile taste in the mouths of the faithful and the unsaved alike. I have prayed that God would bring me something new, and I know that this is it. I am eager to see that newness manifest itself for the people involved in this work shift. My new boss is a good man who practices sound doctrine. I know my God will bless his steadfastness, and I can't wait to see how.
Meanwhile, I wish writing was still a full-time part of my life. Perhaps one day it will be again. I am desperate for a creative outlet, but I am also anxious about whatever splendor or treachery lies over the hill ahead. I am coming to believe that Matt and I will end up in some sort of full-time ministry, either separately or together. I cannot figure out how our skills and gifts and interests will work for the edification of the saints as well as for pay or contentment, but I will leave that up to God. He asks only that we are faithful. So we wait and watch. --
Sticking with my m.o., I am late on yet another train: I just watched "Once," that little indie darling with a ho-hum Grammy-song controversy. I couldn't explain it to matt in a way that made him interested in watching it with me, so I was on my own for this one. It was sweet and innocent and inspiring in so many ways. And it really made me wish I didn't trade my free piano lessons for more time in front of a box of legos.
I also rented a Wanda Sykes stand-up video. I generally think she's pretty funny, but this was mostly awkwardly vulgar with very few gems. Guess Sykes is best taken in small (unanimated) doses.

Don told us about these commercials Marriott is doing using Andrew bird's music. Here's one, in which some chick defies the sciences and catches an apple on her wicked cool high heel. These commercials combine two of my favorite things: Andrew Bird and circus performers (a plate spinner, acrobats, a fire juggler). We went to my dad's house for dinner and board games. We bought them "Hoopla" (from the Cranium people). During the night, I discovered that my family has no idea who the following people are: Louis Armstrong, Garth Brooks, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley. There were others, but these were the most painful. Oh, and my dad had never heard the terms "aromatherapy" or "hookah."
This is why I need you, LJ friends. You make my world normal again.

I just finished backreading some LJ entries from jacksonpublick I'm stoked that "Venture Bros." Season 3 is coming soon. Maybe i can convince Matt to upgrade our cable by then so we don't have to wait for the DVDs to come out. Doubt it.
Meanwhile, I've decided I'm the midst of some sort of midlife crisis. I do not, however, anticipate piercing my eyebrows (or anything else) or getting a tat or buying a luxury car or anything like that. No. This is something that only more Catan could remedy. And maybe's Fo's awesome pasta.
Also, because I've almost OD'd on girliness lately (did I mention we had a girls' getaway to Ruidoso last weekend?), I decided to wrap it up with a purchase of "You've Got Mail." I am hereby declaring a moratorium on chick flicks ... especially ones I'd never choose to watch on my own time (e.g., "The Prince & Me" and it's horrible sequel; anything starring Hillary Duff). Length of said moratorium is TBD. </b></a>![[info]](http://p-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif)

I rediscovered my old flame this week -- old Sixpence music. Weird to think I'm in a similar place in life to where I was when I first found them... hopeful, worried, confused, eager...
---
So I had an interview yesterday for a job in Austin. Firstly, I really, really hold animosity toward Texas. Actually, it's mostly the Texans themselves. But I'm hopeful that Austin is the bastion of sanity in that sea of oil and manure and concrete and humidity.
The interview went really well, I thought. I'm still not sure whether I'll take the job if it's offered -- moving seems so daunting. But I'm relieved about the interview part. It's been ages since I've had to do one, and the last one didn't go well (even though I got the job).
Anyway, we'd love prayer for wisdom. I feel nervous about having to make a decision on whether we should move. I mean, even if we don't get this job, most of the others that are in my line of work are out of state. So, the decision is, keep looking elsewhere (or take that Austin job if it's offered), or look into a complete career change. I'm not really qualified or experienced in any other area, so I'd be at Square One. Not that that's a bad thing... it's just that easier things always are preferable, right? --- Oh. And I finally changed my MySpace layout. Don't really know why. I never use it but to reply to friends comments and whatnot. But I'm never really "active." Change, though, is just sort of where I am right now.

| » My job |
(I sent this out in an email, but here it is for the three of you who read this blog...)
Hi, friends. You know I hate group emails as much as the next person, but this really is the best way (for now). This would amount to a million phone calls (and tears), and I guess I'm just not up for that today. (Though I am happy to respond to any emails or phone calls, should you have questions...)
So, to the point: It has been announced that Saturday (Feb. 23) will be the last day The Albuquerque Tribune will publish. (http://abqtrib.com/news/2008/feb/20/tribune-close/)
This has been my home for seven years. I am aware that I am a better writer, a better person for having walked through its doors every morning. This is a terribly difficult time for many in the newsroom, and I would appreciate your prayers on behalf of my entire Tribune family.
Please pray for courage going forward, for faith, for new jobs. I thank you for the prayers and encouragement you've already offered. You all are such blessings in my life, and I know it is because of your kind thoughts and words that our burden is lighter.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. T
